Google adds animated avatar to Gemini Live for enterprise users

Google's Gemini 3.8 Live update introduces Live Avatar, an animated AI persona that lip-syncs and shows facial expressions during real-time conversations. The feature is currently limited to Gemini Enterprise customers and supports 97 languages without visual degradation. Output includes an invisible SynthID watermark and safeguards to respect identity.
The Live Avatar feature builds directly on Gemini 3.8 Live, which Google unveiled roughly a week earlier and markets as capable of processing visual inputs in near real-time. Enterprise organizations can choose from a preset library of avatars or design custom personas, with the system designed to maintain lip-sync accuracy across all 97 supported languages without compromising video quality or introducing visual drift. The avatar can also display on-screen information while conversing.
Google has embedded its invisible SynthID watermark into all Live Avatar output, alongside built-in safeguards aimed at respecting identity. This positions the feature as an enterprise-facing tool rather than a consumer product, suggesting Google is prioritizing business use cases like customer service or internal communications over general public availability at this stage.
This feature could reshape how businesses handle customer-facing interactions, potentially replacing text-based support or pre-recorded video with real-time, multilingual AI conversations that feel more personal. Organizations may benefit from reduced localization costs, while workers in customer service roles could face increased pressure as AI personas become more lifelike. The watermarking and identity safeguards suggest Google is mindful of deepfake concerns, but the long-term societal impact will depend on how widely this technology spreads beyond enterprise settings and whether it erodes trust in human-AI distinctions.
