Netflix Plans Wide Theatrical Rollout for KPop Demon Hunters Sequel

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said at Bloomberg Screentime on Sept. 30 that the KPop Demon Hunters sequel will receive a broad cinema release. The original film had limited theatrical runs in August and October-November 2025 after becoming Netflix's most-watched original title. The move signals a possible shift in Netflix's film release strategy, with other titles also set for theatrical runs.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said at Bloomberg Screentime on Sept. 30 that the KPop Demon Hunters sequel will get a wide cinema release. The original became Netflix's most-viewed original film, then had brief theatrical runs in August 2025 and again from late October into early November.
Those screenings reportedly earned $18 million to $20 million across 1,700 North American theaters. Netflix is also planning theatrical runs for La Bola Negra, Greta Gerwig's Narnia, an animated Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory adaptation, and an IMAX release for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth in November.
This move could affect Netflix subscribers, theater operators, filmmakers, and fans who prefer communal screenings. If more Netflix originals get cinema windows, audiences may gain choices but possibly wait longer for home viewing. Theater chains may benefit from added high-profile titles, while streaming rivals could feel pressure to rethink their own release strategies. The balance Sarandos described suggests any broader shift may be gradual and measured rather than immediate.
