Arc Raiders Implements Full Motion Capture for Character Performances

Embark Studios upgraded the NPC character Celeste with full motion capture technology to better reflect actress Diana Gardner's actual facial expressions and emotional delivery. The enhanced character model debuted in the Frozen Trail trailer released October 6, 2026, marking the first time the developer applied this level of performance capture to in-game NPCs. The studio plans to continue expanding this technology to other characters and interactions to improve immersion throughout the game.
Arc Raiders had previously relied on text-to-speech synthesis to generate Celeste's dialogue, which limited the character's ability to convey nuanced emotional states through facial animation. By capturing the actual performance data from actress Diana Gardner, Embark can now synchronize her real-world expressions and micro-expressions with the in-game character model, creating a more authentic representation of her acting choices.
The studio views this upgrade as foundational work for a broader initiative. Rather than treating this as a one-off improvement, Embark intends to systematize motion capture integration across multiple NPCs and story interactions, suggesting the technology could become a standard part of their character pipeline for future content updates and expansions.
This advancement could influence how developers approach NPC performance capture in narrative-driven games, particularly those featuring prominent voice actors. Players may experience stronger emotional engagement with characters whose facial animations align with actor performances, potentially raising production standards across the industry. However, the added technical and financial investment required for motion capture integration could also widen resource gaps between larger studios and independent developers working on similar projects.
