Retro Dodo Picks Its Top 18 Retro Handhelds for 2026
The article rounds up 18 retro emulation handhelds that the author has tested over more than five years. It groups recommendations by price and features, including models such as the Retroid Pocket Nova, AYANEO Pocket Air Mini, and ModRetro Chromatic. The devices run Linux or Android and are intended for use with ROM files that players already own.
This roundup could steer retro-gaming enthusiasts and budget-conscious buyers toward specific Android and Linux handhelds, shaping holiday or upgrade purchases. By emphasizing tested performance, price tiers, and niche features, it may pressure manufacturers to compete on displays, controls, and build quality. Its repeated reminder that users should supply ROMs from games they own could also reinforce legal and ethical norms around emulation, potentially influencing how newcomers understand ownership and preservation. The impact likely remains strongest within hobbyist communities rather than the wider public.
