Unofficial PC HD Remake of Zelda II Launches with Co-op and Widescreen

A fan-made HD remake of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has been released for PC, featuring reworked sprites and widescreen support with real side scenery. It includes two-player co-op, save states, fast-forward, and gamepad support. The project contains no original assets, so players must supply their own ROM to run it.
The remake, created by modder Troygentic, reworks the game's sprite art for the opening areas while leaving later sections unfinished. It runs natively on PC and adds modern conveniences such as save states, fast-forward, movie playback, and gamepad support, alongside a two-player co-op mode that works locally or online. Widescreen presentation includes newly drawn scenery on the sides rather than stretching the original image.
Because the project ships without any copyrighted assets, players must supply their own Zelda II ROM to run it. The HD texture pack is distributed separately through Troygentic's Discord server. This approach follows a common pattern among fan remakes, allowing the project to exist without direct Nintendo involvement while still requiring users to own the original game legally.
This release could reignite interest in a lesser-celebrated Zelda entry, potentially drawing new players who missed the NES original. The co-op and widescreen additions may also influence how fans view classic game preservation, showing that community-driven projects can modernize aging titles. However, its reliance on user-supplied ROMs may limit accessibility for casual players, and Nintendo's stance on fan projects could affect how widely the remake circulates.
