Path-Traced Lighting Comes to GTA 2 via Fan-Made RTX Remix Release

A community modder has launched an RTX Remix project that brings path tracing to Grand Theft Auto 2. The release adds real-time lighting effects, a day-night cycle, emissive texture maps, and a corrected widescreen view, with an in-game panel for adjusting settings. The mod can also use frame generation to target 60 FPS, and Rockstar's classic GTA 2 remains available as a free download.
A fan creator known as gabdeg has packaged an RTX Remix project for Grand Theft Auto 2. The mod introduces path-traced illumination, dynamic day-night changes through Remix Plus, emissive texture maps, and a corrected 16:9 framing that prevents side-screen pop-in. An F4 panel lets players tune lighting and time-of-day settings.
The release can employ frame generation to aim for 60 FPS. Rockstar has offered GTA 2 as a free download since December 2004 under its Rockstar Classics label. Similar path-tracing efforts have appeared for older PC titles such as Black Mesa, Need for Speed: Underground, Deus Ex, and Doom.
This mod may mainly affect PC gaming enthusiasts and preservation-minded players, giving them a new way to revisit a decades-old title with modern rendering. It could also encourage more community projects around older games, though hardware demands and setup complexity may limit reach. For Rockstar, it might renew casual interest in GTA 2, without changing the game's official availability.
